In the not-so-distant past, motion picture content owners and distributors stored their precious masters on film reels, and later videotape… this required a secure climate-controlled warehouse, which incurred a hefty annual cost.
As a result of not having proper storage facilities, a lot of movies were lost.
As we started transitioning into the digital era, there was a glimmer of hope as it became apparent that storing content digitally can be done at a fraction of the cost. It even became widely accepted to store film’s a TV series master assets on a simple hard drive, locked away in a cabinet at the production office.
Today, well over a decade into what we think has become a fully digital industry – it is also apparent that storing assets on hard drives is just as risky as having the film negative stored in your garage.
